Importance of Sustainability
Sustainability is gaining traction among enterprises primarily due to the recognition of its business value, with 40% of surveyed companies citing this as a key driver. Other significant factors include overall sustainability concerns and social responsibility, as well as long-term operational resiliency, indicating that firms are not only focused on immediate benefits but also on their broader impact on the environment and society.
Maturity of Sustainability Programs
Survey results indicate that while many organizations perceive themselves as advanced in sustainability, nearly half of the respondents may overestimate their maturity. Only about 48% of enterprises have a full sustainability program for at least part of their IT infrastructure, with a significant portion still in the early stages or having limited programs.
Challenges in Tracking Sustainability Metrics
One of the main challenges organizations encounter is obtaining accurate data and metrics to track their sustainability progress. While many firms start by monitoring energy consumption, they often struggle with more complex metrics like greenhouse gas emissions, which are difficult to calculate and standardize. This gap between tracking and taking actionable steps can hinder overall sustainability efforts.
